We are not sure when dogs were first domesticated but there is evidence of domestication as early as 15,000 years ago. But many believe this process occurred even earlier. Domesticated breeds were an integral part of human cultural development and have proven their usefulness over many millennia. They have been used not just as companion animals but also to hunt, pull carts, rescue people, and as a food source. These are but a few of the roles dogs have played in their continuing evolution.

Long ago, humans learned that by selective breeding, they could produce a wide variety of different dog breeds for many purposes. But breeding wasn’t enough. It also became clear that a dog had to be trained in order to perform the complex tasks desired of their human masters. To this end, a whole variety of dog supplies were created to aid this process. Dog collars were among the first of these inventions and may have even been used to domesticate friendlier wolves into the breeds we know and love today. In training, dog collars help the animal understand its place in its social hierarchy and recognize various alpha males or females as its leader. They also teach the dog to heel, or follow at a prescribed distance and pace alongside its master, so that eventually it will not need a leash to do so.

Another useful invention is dog kennels, which are especially useful with sled dog breeds. Dog kennels are fenced in enclosures or housing for multiple dogs. Sled dogs must live out doors to help become inured to the cold and to develop their own social hierarchy apart from their master. Hunting dogs also benefit from living in kennels for the same reason. Dog supplies such as these have played a crucial role in humans being able to train and care for our best friend.

Sadly, this process of domestication has recently come to be a danger to dog’s themselves. Our desire to breed specific sub-species of dogs, sometimes with unscrupulous practices, has caused inbreeding and a whole host of genetic defects. Puppy mills, in particular, worsen this phenomenon by breeding too many dogs too closely together. The female dog often hasn’t had a chance to fully recover from previous pregnancies before being impregnated again. Often the animals at these mills live in squalid cramped conditions and lack individual human attention.

For this reason, it is very important to buy your new puppy from a reputable breeder. This not only insures that your dog will be healthy, but that the dogs breed as a whole will be healthier. Or if a purebred dog is not a requirement, many mutts make great pets too. Another great thing to do, if you’re a bit more ambitious, is to save a rescue dog. These animals have sometimes suffered neglect or abuse, but can still make excellent pets if given an opportunity in a good home. In short, dogs have been good to us and it behooves us to return the favor. At Kingston Kennels we aim to help you do just that.
