Dog Harness

Most people are familiar with the traditional dog harness. This harness is used in lieu of a collar in walking a dog because the pressure is better distributed and is less likely to choke the animal. These harnesses are particularly popular with smaller dog owners.

Specialized harnesses with handles, for the human to grab, are used by service dogs that assist people with disabilities. The design of these harnesses varies depending on whether the dog is, say, guiding a blind person, or helping pull a person in a wheelchair. These harnesses have proven invaluable in assisting disabled people.

The last sort of dog harness is the sled dog harness. Still popular in northern climes, sled dogs remain a useful and fun activity for pleasure and for delivering goods. When racing sled dogs, an ‘h-backed’ harness is very popular, so called because the harnesses strap resembles an ‘h.’ When pulling freight a heavier, better padded harness is used which is called a freight harness.
